In 1882, a canal was built taking water from Lower Klamath Lake in California, and gravity irrigating 8,000 acres on the eastside of Lost River and Merrill, Oregon.  In 1889, a levee was built to stop Upper Klamath Lake spring runoff from entering the Lost River system and Tule Lake.  The excess water would be diverted to the Klamath River. Early settlers were building an elaborate water system. In 1895, hydroelectric power lit up Linkville.
