Construction Begins. Construction contracts for the dam were awarded by BOR in 1956. The finished dam rises 465 feet above the river. Its top is a half mile wide and a half mile wide through its base. The Trinity Powerplant began construction in 1960. All work was completed in 1963. Several impressive ranches were flooded to create Clair Engle Lake, 19 miles long with 145 miles of shoreline. The Trinity Dam, completed in 1961, was the highest embankment dam in the world at that time.
