Weaverville. Trinity County's largest  town was founded in 1850 by gold miners.  Fire was a constant threat.  By 1859, 20 fireproof brick buildings had been built.  18 are still in use. The courthouse is the second oldest in the state.  Chinese immigrants came and provided labor for placer mining.  By the 1860's, they were replaced by hydraulic and dredger mining.  Many
Chinese left to work on the trans-continental railroad. Weaverville, about ten miles north of the TrinityRiver, prospered with gold found in surrounding areas. Rugged Trinity County has a population of 15,000 and no incorporated towns or stoplights. Weaverville's population is 3,800.
